تمر علينا يوم الاستقلال الجنوب السوداني في التاسع من يوليو من كل عام، وهو يوم يحتفل فيه الجنوبيون بانفصالهم عن السودان واستقلالهم كدولة مستقلة. تعد هذه الفترة من العام فرصة للاحتفال والتأمل في التاريخ الحافل لجنوب السودان ورحلته نحو الاستقلال.
تأسست دولة جنوب السودان رسميًا في العام 2011 بعد إجراء استفتاء استقلال في يناير من ذلك العام، حيث أبدى الأغلبية الساحقة من الناخبين رغبتهم في الانفصال عن السودان. كانت هذه الخطوة تأتي بعد سنوات طويلة من الحرب الأهلية والصراعات التي شهدها جنوب السودان، ومن المهم تسليط الضوء على الجهود والتضحيات التي قدمها الشعب الجنوبي للوصول إلى هذا اليوم التاريخي.
